Saumur (7 June)

As I said – this area is well known for its wine!
The castle is wonderful
with great views over the river.
The Loire is very wide here.
I said a few words to some men who were doing a boys’ own adventure canoing trip down the river.  How awesome would that be?  The Town Hall is striking.
and around the back of the building I was taken with this little room, jutting out of the main structure.
In one of the suburbs, there is the largest dolmen in France.
It’s like seeing the Flintstones’ house.
It’s 23 metres long on the outside and not much smaller inside.
This dolmen is about 5,000 years old.  You wonder how the uprights were ever levered into position, and then sunk into ditches 3 metres deep.
Dolmens were large chamber tombs.  There are (were?) 4,500 throughout France.
